Dr Joseph Xavier is a Cardiothoracic vascular surgeon in Manipal Hospital, with a distinguished  academic career, which laid a strong foundation, giving him a broad insight into the subject as he acquired all the necessary surgical skills to deal with the vast and challenging problems encompassing the field of Cardiothoracic vascular surgery.

Having performed cardiothoracic and thoracoabdominal vascular surgeries for more than 26 years, he has achieved excellence in his field. He has performed more than 20,000 surgeries with excellent results, of which more than 8000 are heart operations on children, including newborns and infants.

He has to his credit some ‘first operations’ in Karnataka and India, which includes complex heart operations performed on small children.

Experienced in Extra Corporeal Membrane Oxygenation (ECMO) technology and has to his credit the first surviving patient to be successfully placed on a left ventricular assist device in Karnataka in 2002.

Having trained from the country’s premier medical technological research institute, Sri Chitra Tirunal Institute in Trivandrum, played an important role in the development and clinical trial of India’s indigenous artificial heart valve - the TTK Chitra valve.

Gained exposure in Germany (Leipzig) for minimal access surgery for valve repairs and replacements in children and adults. He is competent in thoracic aneurysm surgery and endo-vascular stenting, Beating heart coronary bypass operations through minimal access technique, ventricular restitution surgery, and arrhythmia surgery. Presently, he focuses on Adult and pediatric cardiac surgery and minimal access surgery for valve repairs and replacements, and minimal access to multi-vessel coronary bypass grafting on a beating heart and heart failure management.

He is also involved in quality control programs, a member of the hospital infection control committee, OT users committee, and faculty to Rajiv Gandhi University for various paramedical and surgical courses, and faculty to National Board cardiac surgical trainees.

He is a professional who values ethics and practices evidence-based medicine and follows international and national protocols in patient management.
